  • The Wealth of Nations - Adam Smith:Adam Smith is one of the foremost political economists of all time. Understanding the study of politics requires an understanding of his ideas. Every political theorist has read Smith, and he has influenced the development of political theory for two decades. His central idea is that the ‘invisible hand’ of the free market economy raises living standards. The development of the free market, however, is hindered by such forces as monopolies, privileges, and the debilitating effect of intense menial labour on the poor. The role of the market is one of the central axes of political discussion to this very day. It is a debate that will resurface again and again over the course of a politics degree. Free-market logic finds perhaps its most eloquent expression in the works of Adam Smith, so understanding a range of phenomena from socialism to the IMF requires knowledge of Smith’s ideas.
