This is especially true in chemistry where participants will need to evaluate complex processes, make informed predictions and test their hypotheses with experiments that not only yield exciting results but also satisfy their curiosity. Along a passion for investigation comes a desire to see the results of one’s work applied in the practical world. At the Immerse Summer Chemistry programme, students will spend two weeks learning how to do exactly that: make practical use of important on-paper topics.

Delivered through lectures, hands-on labs, and in-class debate, the curriculum will introduce students to a range of university-level organic, inorganic, and biological chemistry. Each lesson has been carefully designed to build on secondary school material, both consolidating previous knowledge and preparing students for more advanced concepts.

After two weeks living on-campus and studying with their peers, students will return home with a much better understanding of the challenges involved in studying Chemistry at a university level. They’ll have covered challenging material, learned from academics at the world’s top universities, and enjoyed first-hand experience living and study independently.

Your two-week programme curriculum will cover everything from the underlying principles of atomic and molecular structures, to the natural laws governing REDOX equilibrium and reactions. While a lot of the material will be on-par with first-year concepts, great care has been taken to ensure that nothing is overwhelming or too far advanced.

To start, you’ll go over the Bohr model, review the mole unit of measurement, and get up to speed with the basics of quantum physics. From that foundation, you’ll then begin building a body of knowledge around electron behaviour/bonding, eventually moving on to more practical lessons: learning to apply the VSEPR Theory and predicting the shapes of molecules and compounds. You’ll then be introduced to the fundamentals of organic chemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics, and acids/bases.

The last few days of the programme are dedicated to sustainable chemistry, nanotechnology, and their implications on your everyday life. In fact, this emphasis on the “everyday” applications of chemistry will surface multiple times throughout your course. As you complete the programme, you’ll have moved beyond a mere theoretical understanding of chemistry and will able to appreciate its crucial role in the world around you.

For many, it’s helpful to get a clear picture of what that life might look like before making the decision to pursue a degree in chemistry. This course is intended to provide that picture, engaging participants in a style of learning, curriculum, and living arrangement that closely mirrors undergraduate life as a chemistry student.

In the Immerse Chemistry programme, students will be challenged to study more or less independently, living on-campus at a Cambridge University College. This a key part of the experience, pushing each participant to become more responsible for their own learning as they familiarise themselves with the new demands of university life. By the time they’re ready to start their undergraduate studies, Immerse alumni will already be somewhat familiar with their new life; both with the level of content taught at university, as well as the new challenges to be found in living and studying on campus.

By the end of this programme students will:

  • Have gone far beyond basic chemistry by taking on advanced, university-level topics
  • Be able to accurately predict the shapes of molecules and compounds
  • Examine real case studies to better understand the key concepts of entropy and enthalpy
  • Understand the importance of ‘transition metals’ in everyday life
  • Get comfortable discussing and thinking about the principles of quantum theory and relativity
  • Know how to measure the photon emission of a hydrogen atom during Electron Ionization (EI)
  • Understand the laws of thermodynamics and be able to apply them to solve practical challenges
  • Be able to calculate equilibrium constants when working with weak acids/bases.

Students in this course will receive personalised feedback from their tutors about their performance, the material covered, and even a list of individualised suggestions for further study.

The Immerse summer programme schedule is packed with a wide range of unique academic and extracurricular activities.

Participants start off the day with breakfast in the main college dining hall, with a variety of continental and hot breakfast choices available. This is followed by the first academic session of the day, which takes place in a seminar or lecture format. Participants are then guided to lunch at some of Cambridge’s finest sandwich bars and cafés, and are welcome to explore the city in small groups. Following lunch, academic sessions continue in the format of small tutorial groups or workshops. After all the core academic sessions are finished, students are treated to one of a wide range of excursions and cultural activities, including punting, museum visits and sports activities. A three course dinner in the college dining hall is then followed by an evening social event to help participants wind down and socialise after a packed day.
