Florence Instone has just finished her second year at Newnham College, Cambridge, where she studies Human, Social and Political Sciences. She is undertaking the role of mentor for the one-week Global Leadership course, as well as the two-week International Relations course.
This Sunday marked the arrival of Immerse Education’s first participants of the summer. After arriving a day early to set up, the mentors were keen to meet their tutees for the next week. Arrivals are to participate in one of two programmes: Medicine or Global Leadership.
Meeting the Students
Registration ran smoothly and soon students were settled in to their rooms for the week. Many were thrilled at the views of the city centre through their windows. Programme Directors Tom and Sarah were equally excited to meet the students! With preparations for Immerse taking the best part of a year, our directors were thrilled to see all their planning come to fruition.
The Immerse programme is taking place in St Catharine’s College, Cambridge – otherwise known lovingly as Catz. The college is a gorgeous venue and given the (for once) exquisite British weather, families were keen to take to take pictures of the scenery. Joining myself as members of the Immerse mentor team are three other fantastic Oxbridge students. All four of us have just finished our second year of university at Oxford or Cambridge. First, there is Fiona, a King’s College Economist. Then, there is Gopija, a Gonville and Caius College medic. Thirdly, we have Diptarko (or Dip), a Physicist from Oxford – Cambridge’s arch nemesis! Finally, there is myself (Flo), a Human, Social and Political Sciences student at Newnham College.
It now being Monday, the students have just completed their first day of lessons. Filip, a student from Norway, was thrilled at the way in which Global Leadership threw him into the nitty gritty of politics and human rights. Medicine students remarked on much they enjoyed their introduction to dissection, in which they got up close and personal with animal lungs.
This afternoon, students will be enjoying a walking tour of Cambridge in the glowing July sunshine. This will be followed by a workshop on applying to Oxbridge, as well as a quiz night. I look forward to interacting with students and advising them on their applications and am certain that they will get a lot out of it.
Unfortunately, that’s it for now! But given the plethora of activities we have planned for this week, I am sure I will have many more exciting updates very soon.
