Throughout the Immerse Education Economics summer school programme for 13-15 year olds, you will be introduced to the topics that form the foundation of economics, reside at a Cambridge University College, and develop new skills as you work through a carefully constructed syllabus.
You will be equipped with insights to help decide whether to pursue studying Economics at secondary or high school. You’ll engage in both theoretical and practical learning to discover the building blocks of economics, and how it affects the real-world.
Critically examine supply and demand model of market behaviour using a famous test by economic pioneers!
Develop theoretical and practical knowledge within microeconomics and specifically supply and demand
Understand macro-economic concepts such as opportunity cost and comparative advantage
Experience authentic student life in University of Cambridge colleges
Interactive learning in small groups (av: 1:7) from expert university tutors
Meet other motivated high school students from all over the world
You are introduced to the world of macroeconomics through a fascinating lesson on one of the most famous economists of all time, Adam Smith, gaining a thorough overview of how macroeconomics affects the world. This session also gives you the opportunity to learn about normative and positive statements, the ‘invisible hand’ and what ‘scarcity’ is.
You will discover some of the most interesting secondary level economics, including the Production Possibilities Frontier, the different types of elasticities and comparative advantage, specialisation and gains from trade. This lesson will instill you with academic confidence in university level economics topics.
Under certain conditions, markets can be expected to produce ‘good’ outcomes (in a sense that can be made precise). However, in many other cases, markets may be expected to perform less well. You will learn five possible reasons for this: market power, adverse selection, moral hazard, externalities and signalling.
You’ll finish with an exciting one day mini-conference! By working independently over the two-week period, you will spend their last day discussing your relevant findings on your assigned Capstone Project, as well as presenting this to your peers and tutor. The course finishes up with a workshop and review session to discuss applying for economics, business and management degrees, plus subsequent career options.
