Each year, thousands of students enter our Immerse Education Essay Competition with the hope of winning one of our coveted scholarship places. Marianna M
In her insightful essay, “What Do All Great Leaders Have in Common?”, Marianna captivates with a nuanced exploration of leadership, pinpointing three fundamental traits that distinguish outstanding leaders: the courage to challenge existing dogmas, the determination to drive change, and a deep-rooted commitment to fairness. Judged by Arnold Longboy from the iO Academy, the essay was lauded for its depth, particularly in how it used historical, contemporary, and literary figures to exemplify these traits.

Farah A
Farah found the essay competition through a simple Google search, and ended up winning a highly ranked partial scholarship, and attended a Medicine programme in Cambridge in the summer of 2023.
The experience enhanced her applications and CV with practical experience beyond typical academics, and making her a strong candidate in medicine.
Bella L
Bella’s essay in response to the question “How important is it to have strong female leadership?” eloquently champions the pivotal role of female leadership in modern organisations, challenging long-standing patriarchal norms. By highlighting statistical evidence and the transformative potential of inclusive leadership, the document makes a compelling case for the necessity of female leaders.

Guest Judge Tom Ireland, Royal Society of Biology: “This essay stood out to me for the way the student tackled an important yet under-discussed aspect of science. Although science is meant to be objective, it is influenced by many things, such as culture and politics, and the personalities of those who study it – something scientists don’t think about often enough. In this essay, a fascinating period in Brazilian history is explained with clarity, and the implications of this dangerous idea are explained thoughtfully. The work prompts us to wonder what elements of our current scientific thinking we will look back on with concern in future.”

Below is an extract from Mina’s 100% scholarship-winning essay: “A report from the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) demonstrates that “racial and ethnic minorities receive lower-quality health care than white people – even when insurance status, income, age, and severity of conditions are comparable”. Another study of 400 hospitals in the US indicates how certain patient groups acquire cheaper and more conservative treatments than others.”
Anais W
Anais joined Immerse in Sydney to study Creative Writing. She had previously attended an Online Insights programme with Immerse, and so knew about the other courses offered. Once her school recommended the Essay Competition to her, she entered – feeling motivated by the essay question for Creative Writing.
Riya R
Riya was searching for a medicine summer programme and came across Immerse Education. After submitting her essay, Riya went on to win a 100% fully-funded scholarship for the Immerse Education Medicine programme.
With Immerse, she was able to delve into both the theory and practice of Medicine, learning university-level topics and explore how internal systems function and interact with one-another.

Noor found out about the Essay Competition through her school, and didn’t think the prize of a 100% scholarship would be real. She decided to write an essay on her favourite topic anyway because she had found the question so compelling.

After exploring positive and negative business role models such as Elon Musk and Ex Kodak CEO Kay Whitmore, Kornelia finished her essay off with an inspiring summary: “To be a good role model in business, one should possess qualities of responsibility, morality and be able to make decisions that help your company evolve. Only then can the next generation of entrepreneurs truly thrive.”
