Exceptional introductory course in Engineering in Oxford colleges

Throughout the Immerse Education Engineering summer school for 13-15-year-olds, you will learn the foundations of engineering, reside at a Oxford University College on your Engineering summer program, and develop new engineering skills as you work through a carefully constructed syllabus.

You will gain a better understanding of the history and trends within engineering, as well as gaining practical insight into problem-solving through a series of practical tasks and logic puzzles. You will also explore the fundamentals of topics such as thermodynamics, materials, mechanics, and electrical engineering.

"

Our tutor was amazing. He knew the answer to every question that you could think of about engineering, and knew about everyone’s specialist subjects and was happy to discuss opportunities in each field with us.

My favourite aspect of the programme would be going on trips such as the tour of the London Underground, and how engineering plays such a vital role. It’s so much easier to learn and focus when there’s something that’s always keeping your attention rather than just having to focus only on lectures and classroom learning.

The thing that I found the most fun was socialising with everyone, whether it’s engineers or the medics or business people. We’ve only known them for two weeks, and this sounds so cheesy, but I feel like I’ve known them for years because we’re always together, we’re always helping each other.

Action-packed social programme

Outside of lessons, we are proud to offer a busy and diverse social programme to help you get the most out of your time in Oxford. This includes activities such as punting on the River Cam, zorb football and a murder mystery night in the college.

There are also two excursions during the programme, one day trip to visit Oxford and its constituent colleges, as well as an optional day out in London, seeing the city’s most famous landmarks as well as some free time for shopping. Those who choose not to travel to London are invited to afternoon tea in Oxford.

Activities and excursions are run by our team of friendly mentors – whose main job is to maximise your enjoyment.

Work hard, play hard.

A unique social programme.

Experience traditional 'Formal Hall'

Formal Hall is a traditional weekly meal that takes place in every college. This is an opportunity for students to dress up, dine by candlelight in the magical surroundings of an Oxford University college’s dining hall.

As an Immerse student, you will experience formal dinner three times during your stay – once per week in Oxford, as well as in an Cambridge University college on the excursion day.

Formal hall is truly a memorable occasion, so remember to bring some smart clothes!

A unique social programme.

Immerse™ Engineering Sample Modules

To see how the programme is structured, download the Academic Insights timetable here.
  • Module 1 - Industrial Revolutions

    Industrial Revolutions
Trace the history of Engineering across four industrial revolutions, exploring the breakthroughs that were made and the impact that these developments had on future engineers. Based on this context, you will discuss what the future of engineering could look like.
  • Module 2 - Telecommunication Engineering

    Telecommunication Engineering
You will explore the mechanisms behind the components of telephones and radios. Learn how Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work, as well as AM and FM radio systems. Armed with the theoretical principles, you'll then be challenged to create your own radio receiver.
  • Module 3 - Control And Automation Engineering

    Control And Automation Engineering
You will explore signals and systems before learning about proportional-integral-derivative control systems. Focus will then move to the ethics of AI with a "moral machine" simulation preceding a debate to test your research and oratory skills.
  • Module 4 - Engineering A Solution

    Engineering A Solution
You will be presented with a known problem and asked to work in pairs to create a solution based on the engineering principles that have been encountered. You will then present your idea and demonstrate a working prototype to your peers before facing questions.
