Sports, Statements and Supervisions!

Written by a Immerse Education 2016 Summer Mentor.

Following a successful second day of tutorials, everyone headed to Jesus Green for the afternoon activity. Participants got to sample two popular sports amongst Cambridge students: croquet and ultimate frisbee. Armed with mallets, participants teamed up in pairs and attempted the croquet course, with each team taking turns to hit their ball through the particular order of hoops.

Halfway through the session, participants swapped over to take part in ultimate frisbee, a sport where the aim is to catch the flying disc in the end zone after a series of passes down the pitch (no running with the disc allowed!). Adorned with colourful face paint, the participants jumped right into the game. Team sizes were slightly above regulation, turning out to be 16-a-side, which made for very lively and competitive matches.

One of our participants (Ana) turned 1
7 and to celebrate this, the whole dining hall joined in to sing happy birthday whilst she was presented with a cake, perfectly iced by her mentor Jiali.

Getting Down to Business

After some well-deserved free time, participants reconvened in the lecture theatre for a talk about applying to universities in the UK. Two of our mentors (Ore and Tom) spoke at length about how to write a good personal statement, with many of the participants contributing to discussion about the positive points of some sample personal statements. The talk also highlighted the specifics surrounding applying to Cambridge, especially as an international student, and was followed by an informal Q&A.
