I was the student who had a different answer every time an adult asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” One week it was a diplomat, the next a doctor. So when in my 9th year of school my teachers started asking about my subject choices, I felt less excited and more cornered.

Coincidentally, the Immerse Education team visited my school campus in the 2023-2024 academic year. The idea of a programme that would allow me to interactively experience a career of my choice sounded helpful, so I spoke with my supervisor about signing up for one of Immerse’s many courses.

That following summer I ended up in Cambridge studying law. Despite the wide range of locations and course options provided, I was drawn in by Cambridge’s vintage yet lively charm. During the duration of my first course, I learnt what it would be like to study law from an experienced professor. The programme was adapted to the cohort, with all the concepts being thoroughly explained and demonstrated.

Even though during my first summer with Immerse I got to explore the city and make connections with students from all over the world, law did not seem like something I wanted to continue with. So, the next summer, I continued with Immerse in their business course in Tokyo.

Tokyo was completely different compared to Cambridge. What stood out in the Tokyo location was the thoughtful team of counsellors who supervised us at the hotel, guided us through the after-course activities, and shared stories of their lives in Tokyo.

This upcoming summer, I will be joining Immerse for the third time in Singapore, studying medicine. My time with Immerse allowed me to experience different career options in different locations and finally settle on what it was I wanted to do. Now, after my experiences, I hope to pursue a degree in biochemistry. At the same time, I do not wish to abandon my experiences in the humanities entirely. Law and business, for example, taught me important reasoning and debating skills I’ve been utilising in other areas of knowledge.
