Mentor Blog, 2022

Our first students arrived early on Sunday, just as mentors were finishing preparations. Following some ice-breakers in the evening, students headed to their rooms ahead of what was to be a busy week.

Monday, the first day of classes, offered many opportunities to make new friends. At lunchtime, mentors showed students their favourite food spots. The restaurant Aromi turned out to be a hit. Students reportedly returned there for lunch throughout the week for the delicious pizza, focaccia, and arancini.

An afternoon walking tour of Cambridge and an evening fireside chat with mentors helped students learn more about this amazing city and the university.

The Wednesday evening activity was the game Werewolf. The first round was run by the mentors but once everyone got the hang of it students took overenthusiastically (so enthusiastically that mentors were met with disappointment when they announced the end of the activity as the 10 pm curfew time approached).

Students got competitive during Wednesday’s scavenger hunt but the evening offered an opportunity to unwind at a traditional Cambridge formal dinner at Sidney Sussex College.

Thursday was sports day, and have to say that the Immerse Magdalene football tournament was more exciting than the World Cup. Discussions continued until dinner but were soon replaced by discussions of philosophy inspired by the evening’s guest speaker event with Nigel Warburton.

On Saturday we left Magdalene early and headed for London excited to explore all the famous landmarks. After a fun day out in London, students came back in time for dinner and then relaxed in the evening by singing along to the ABBA musical Mamma Mia.
