Harvard University is one of the most prestigious institutions in the world, renowned for its academic excellence, alumni network, and world-class facilities and faculties.

Securing admission into this renowned institution allows you to earn a degree accepted and respected everywhere and access a great alumni network.

This is why the competition for the limited admissions spaces is so stiff, even for exceptionally gifted students. According to the latest data on the Class of 2028, Harvard admitted only 1,974 out of 54,008 applicants – a measly 3.59%.

Securing admission to Harvard is challenging and requires a genuinely standout application.

In this article, we’ll examine the key factors that contribute to a successful Harvard application, exploring essential aspects such as academic performance, extracurricular activities, essays, letters of recommendation, and interviews.

What Traits Will Help Students Get into Harvard?

Harvard expects all students to have strong academic credentials for the standards in play at Harvard. However, beyond this requirement, the University seeks intellectually curious students who possess a unique blend of qualities that contribute to a vibrant and diverse campus community.

According to the Admissions page on the Harvard website, other criteria include:

Leadership

Harvard is looking for applicants who demonstrate leadership potential. Such applicants have shown initiative in the past and taken responsibility by leading clubs, organising events, making meaningful contributions, or volunteering for a cause.

Creativity

The University values creative thinkers who possess innovative thinking skills or produce exceptional art pieces. The application process allows the submission of supplemental materials such as music recordings, artwork, and even academic projects.

Commitment to Societal Impact

Harvard is also big on students who show their pursuits in life are beyond themselves. They want students to be passionate about making a positive difference in the world.

Strength of Character

Your ability to demonstrate strong character traits such as integrity, resilience, and perseverance will also set you apart as an applicant. It’s important to stress that the Admissions Committee notes that there is no particular formula for admission to the University. This presents an opportunity for you to shine by selling your unique experiences and how they have shaped who you are.

Furthermore, Harvard seeks students with a clear sense of purpose and who know what they want to achieve. Your ability to articulate your goals and passion for your chosen field of study will distinguish you from the pack.

Harvard Deadlines and Requirements

Harvard University requires applicants to submit their applications by one of two deadlines: Early Action on November 1st or Regular Decision on January 1st.

Early action is particularly suited to applicants who:

  • Have SAT/ACT scores or GPA that exceed the typical scores for successful Harvard applicants,
  • Possess a strong, consistent academic record over time,
  • Have done extensive research on the type of universities that match their goals and academic pursuits, and;
  • See Harvard as their first choice.

We will provide additional information on early action later in the article.

These deadlines are generally consistent each year. However, it’s important to check Harvard’s official admissions website for the most accurate and updated information for each application cycle.

Early Action applicants should expect a notification by the middle of December, while Regular Decision applicants should receive the same towards the end of March.

All applicants must complete either the Common Application or the Coalition Application.

The application process involves several essential components:

School Performance Reports

A secondary school report should be submitted by your school counsellor, but other school leaders may do it. In particular, you’re expected to submit:

  • Midyear report: The Admissions Committee needs to evaluate your performance during the first half of your senior year.
  • Teacher recommendation: Two teachers in different academic subjects must fill out the Teacher Recommendation forms on your behalf.
  • Final school report and transcripts: Final school report and transcripts submitted via Credential exchange (preferred by Harvard) or the application system you applied with.

Standardised Test Scores

You’re expected to provide your test scores from either SAT or ACT standardised tests.

In “exceptional cases” Harvard accepts other tests such as AP exam results, IB Actual or Predicted Scores, and more.

Supplemental Materials

Supplemental materials allow you to showcase your exceptional talents or achievements.

Personal Essay

You must submit personal essays as part of your application to Harvard. It’s a superb chance to exhibit your identity outside your grades and test scores.

Essay topics are broad and vary depending on the application route you’re pursuing.

Application Fee

There is an $85 application fee for all undergraduate programs.

What GPA is Needed to Get into Harvard?

Harvard’s 2023-2024 Common Data Set, a report for facilitating higher education comparison, provides details of successful applicants’ GPAs.

Approximately 74% of admitted students had a GPA of 4.0, and 19.67% graduated high school with a GPA between  3.75 and 3.99.

Overall, nearly 94% of enrolled students graduated high school with at least a GPA of 3.75.

Harvard considers GPA in the context of the applicant’s high school’s grading system and curriculum rigour. That is, a high GPA from a school with a rigorous curriculum is valued more favourably than a high GPA from a high school with a less challenging curriculum.

What Test Scores Are Needed to Get into Harvard?

The SAT scores of the middle 50% of Harvard’s Class of 2027 were between 1490 and 1580, while their ACT scores ranged from 34 to 36.

About 92.34% of successful applicants for the Class of 2027 scored between 700 and 800 on the SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing test, and 95.94% scored in the same range for the SAT Math test.

Using the SAT composite score, 99.44% of successful applicants scored between 30-36.

Speaking of these standardised tests, we reckon that they carry significant weight in the overall application evaluation. The University believes that “SAT and ACTs are better predictors of Harvard grades than high school grades.”

Is TOEFL Needed to Get into Harvard?

A strong English proficiency is essential for studying at Harvard. However, TOEFL is not a requirement for undergraduate applicants, including international students. Despite not being obligated, you may choose to add your TOEFL results as part of the supplemental materials you submit.

Can You Apply to Harvard Early?

Harvard offers an early application option called Restrictive Early Action. If you apply by November 1st, you’ll receive a decision by mid-December.

Applying early offers potential advantages, such as demonstrating strong interest and receiving an earlier admission decision. The acceptance rate of 8.7% for Restrictive Early Action applicants is significantly higher than 2.7% for regular applicants

Tips to Increase Your Chances of Getting into Harvard

Getting into Harvard is highly competitive. It requires a well-rounded application. Below, we share expert tips to help you enhance your application and make a lasting impression on the Harvard Admissions Committee.

1. High GPA and Standardised Test Score

As established above, most successful candidates are exceptional students; 74% of successful applicants have a GPA score of 4.0 and above.  While a 3.75 GPA can still get you through the door, aiming for 4.0 increases your odds.

More importantly, you need to ace your SAT or ACT. In Harvard’s own words, these tests are more predictive of your performance in the University.

For the ACT, target a score range of 30-36 and 760 upwards for the SAT.

2. Extracurricular Activities

Beyond strong academics, Harvard values applicants who are actively involved in extracurricular activities. The key to extracurricular activities is having deep commitment and engagement in one or two interests.

Commitment to one or two significant interests helps establish a passion for these interests rather than trying to pad your resume with superficial involvement.

3. Apply Early

One in 11 early applicants succeeds, compared to one in 37 regular applicants, although Harvard argues this is only due to the strength of the talent pool.

Another advantage of applying early is getting a notification about your application by mid-December, giving you time to plan ahead.

4. Write a High-Quality Personal Essay

Your essay is a vital component of the application process. It captures who you are, your goals, and how the course ties to your long-term aspirations.

Take the time to craft a compelling and authentic piece that showcases your unique qualities, experiences, talent, journey, and perspectives.

Investing in essay writing courses or summer schools to enhance your writing skills and showcase your interests may be worth it.

Proofread the essay thoroughly and share it with others to hear their thoughts and recommendations on improving it.

5. Recommendation Letters

Harvard wants those who have experienced you to vouch for your behaviour and person.

Hence, it’s crucial that the teachers you choose to write a recommendation letter must know you well and can speak to your strengths and achievements.

This ensures the recommendation letters are personalised and highlight your unique qualities and accomplishments.

Takeaway: Your Path to Harvard Starts Here

Getting into Harvard is no easy task, but it’s within reach with dedication, a standout application, and a clear sense of purpose. Each element of your application plays a crucial role in your success.

Applying early and writing a powerful personal essay can also give you an edge in this highly competitive process.
