When you picture Cambridge summer courses, what do you imagine?

Maybe it’s lectures in historic university halls, formal dinners beneath vaulted ceilings, or punting along the River Cam with new friends.

At Immerse Education’s Cambridge Summer School, this vision becomes reality.

Each day balances academic sessions, cultural immersion, and free time to connect with participants from around the world.

Here’s what a “day in the life” really looks like, brought to life with stories from students who’ve already experienced it.

Morning: A Taste of University Life

Your day begins in college accommodation, just like a Cambridge undergraduate. Rooms are modern and supervised, but stepping out into centuries-old courtyards never stops feeling magical.

Over breakfast in the dining hall, you’ll catch up with friends from across the world, sharing plans for the day ahead. Breakfast is provided for all participants as part of their programme fee.

Then it’s time to head into your academic sessions.

For Academic Insights, this means university-level teaching in small groups, led by expert tutors from Cambridge, Oxford, and other world-class universities. With around seven participants per class, lessons feel interactive and personal.

As Nicoletta, a past participant, recalled: “A classroom full of passionate students and a deeply passionate tutor contributed to the sense of fulfilment I experienced during this wonderful learning experience.

The small class sizes allowed the discussions to flow, and I was able to connect with my peers and make lasting friendships.”

For Career Insights sessions, mornings are often filled with skills-based workshops and project sessions. These combine expert teaching with hands-on experiences that bring each subject to life.

Whether it’s law, engineering, or medicine, the focus is always on real-world learning guided by passionate tutors.

As Annastacia, a Law participant, shared: “The class sizes are small, so everyone has a chance to participate.” Gabriella, studying International Relations, added that “everyone feels welcome to express their own opinion.”

Lunchtime

Each day participants will have a two-hour lunch break to discover many cafes, eateries, and picnic spots in Cambridge. For younger participants, lunch is provided in college, meaning that this long lunch break can be a time to catch up with friends in the college buttery.

For those venturing further afield, students often discover new cuisines in Cambridge’s market square, enjoy familiar favourites at a chain restaurant, or follow their mentors’ recommendations on the top spots as enjoyed by hungry Cambridge undergraduates.

Early Afternoon: Final Classes, Personal Projects and Industry Visits

After lunch, theory turns into practice during your Cambridge summer programme. For Academic Insights participants, this often means working on your personal project or diving into practical exercises that bring classroom learning to life.

As Xuan Wang, a Medicine participant at Sidney Sussex, described: “We wrapped up our anatomy/physiology unit by examining, dissecting, and suturing an animal heart (sheep, thank goodness). It was an immensely fascinating practical, as I have never done anything like it before.”

She went on to reflect: “I learned through experience the location of valves, the color and the smell of real body parts, and the feeling of putting my suturing practice to work in real flesh. It was a bit unnerving but incredibly fascinating.”

Career Insights students may spend this portion of the day on an industry visit. Previous visits have included law courts, creative studios, and even medical labs.

These experiences help you picture what your future career might look like, and they’re a chance to ask professionals candid questions about their journeys.

Afterwards, everyone comes together for lunch in college, swapping stories from the morning before enjoying some free time.

Afternoon: Exploring Cambridge

One of the unique features of our Cambridge summer courses is how seamlessly learning blends with cultural exploration. Afternoons are often devoted to discovering the city and its traditions and unwinding with various creative, active and cultural experiences.

As Nicoletta, a past participant, shared:

Now I am not going to lie… I will miss waking up in the morning to the beauty of Cambridge, anticipating learning about Hobb’s Theory of State and Society, eating Aromis’s pizza for lunch, and punting on the River Cam, with the people I met here that I now call my friends. It’s an experience I will cherish forever and never forget.”

Guided college tours are another highlight. As one Creative Writing participant at Christ’s College explained:

“Even before the lessons started, I felt inspired by the mere surroundings, consisting of beautiful old buildings and a city bustling with life. It all has a certain charm to it, marked by time yet full of modern energy.”

For Career Insights students, afternoons sometimes feature guest speakers or further project workshops.

You might attend a session with a Cambridge researcher or a professional who shares insider stories from industries like sustainability or journalism.

By late afternoon, there’s usually free time built into the schedule. Some students head into town for ice cream at Benet’s or Fitzbillies, while others relax in college gardens. A few prefer to use the quiet time to work on their personal projects.

Evening: Socials, Formal Dinners, and Talent Nights

Evenings are when Cambridge really comes alive, and it’s here that Cambridge summer courses shine through their balance of tradition and fun.

Dinner kicks off the social side of the day, and sometimes this takes the form of a formal black-tie dinner in the college hall — complete with gowns, candlelight, and three-course meals.

As one mentor described: “On Wednesday evening, participants were invited to participate in possibly their most Cambridge of Cambridge experiences yet: a three-course dinner in Jesus College’s formal hall.

Our mentees dressed up to the nines and were thrilled to have their pictures taken by our photographer-in-residence… Given the looks on their faces both before and after the meal, it is safe to say that formal was a success!”

After dinner, a packed calendar of social activities begins. From quiz nights and film evenings to lively games like Werewolf, there’s always something to enjoy.

One evening highlight is the Talent Show, which participants described as unforgettable.

As the blog recounts: “The following two hours were packed with too many fantastic performances to list them all. Special mentions must go to Sophie, Meg, and Helena singing Maroon Five’s ‘Sunday Morning’; Gabrielle’s beautiful Swan Lake ballet, which received a standing ovation; Jay channelling Tracy Chapman, and Clemens’ unique speed drawing that left the judges lost for words.”

The night ended in style with group karaoke: “Before long, the whole auditorium was on their feet singing the Lion Sleeps Tonight.”

Cultural experiences are woven into the evenings, too. You might attend a fireside chat with your tutor, explore Cambridge’s museums during “Lates”, or listen to a world-class guest speaker.

Past events have included talks from Olympians, neuroscientists, and travel writers.

Weekends: Excursions and Shared Adventures

Saturdays are for adventures beyond Cambridge. Depending on your programme, you could spend the day in London visiting world-famous landmarks, exploring Oxford, or experiencing UK heritage sites.

As Lucas, a mentor, described: “On the Saturday trip to London, we visited the centre of the capital, starting on Victoria Embankment, we wandered along the Thames before veering off towards the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square, and then on to Covent Garden.

The walking tour immersed students in the political and cultural centre of the UK and helped them to become familiar with the city and its surroundings.”

Sundays are usually arrivals or departures, but for those staying, it’s a chance to enjoy a slower pace – board games, relaxed tours, or preparing for the academic week ahead.
