So far, the Immerse Creative Writing summer school at Oxford has been both exciting and educational. I’ve learned some great tips and tricks from my Creative Writing tutor, Chelsea, that have helped boost my confidence in writing.
One thing I have learnt is how to write more descriptively. We have also experimented with writing in different environments that were very inspiring; this has taught me that we can find inspiration almost anywhere.
Chelsea has introduced me to the concept of free-writing, which is a prewriting technique practised in both academic environments and creative writing workshops. The process involves writing continuously for a set period of time with no concern for conventions or mechanics, sometimes working from a specific prompt provided by a teacher. This technique has really helped me to switch my thinking brain off and just write – I will definitely be using this technique more in the future!

The various afternoon activities have been entertaining and interactive. During the Oxford walking tour, I learnt so much about the history of Oxford and what makes Oxford different to other cities. My mentor, Tilly, has been very helpful and kind. She has helped to answer all of my questions and is super understanding. Other mentors have been very helpful too, and they’re all very knowledgeable.
I’ve made so many friends here from different countries. Josh, the campus manager, has been very friendly and social from the beginning. The program has taught me so much and I can’t wait to learn more from it.
