The participants started their day with a speedy breakfast in order to embark upon an exciting tour of Gonville and Caius College at 9:00am. With three mentors studying at the college, the participants were shown the Hall, the Library, the Chapel, a typical student room and enjoyed a relaxing walk around the grounds.
After a busy morning in tutorials, there was the second tour of the day at 12:00pm. All the participants were taken to the stunning Chapel of Kings College. With construction of the Chapel having started in 1446 and the building having the largest fan vault in the world, it really is a phenomenal sight and the real heart of Cambridge. A splendid example of late Gothic architecture. The mentors enjoyed watching the faces of participants as they entered the building in awe of the grand ceiling and quickly rummaged for their phones to take as many pictures as possible.
Time with the Mentors
For the afternoon activity, there were informal discussions with mentors in the Conservatory over coffee and cake. This was a fantastic chance for participants to ask the mentors any subject specific questions or questions about University life and the application process. It is very useful for them to have one-to-one time in order for the mentors to tailor their advice to the participant’s needs and for questions to be asked in a less daunting environment than in front of all those on the programme.
We continued to work with the mentors focus on the university application process throughout the evening. There were presentations on applications for Medicine, Maths and Law. These presentations targeted the UK admissions tests, subject specific interview advice and providing links to further information available on the Internet. All participants that attended had an abundance of questions which were eagerly answered by the mentors. As an alternative, the participants were offered two options to relax and unwind: watching a film on our large projector in the auditorium or watching the Olympics.
The participants then proceeded to bed to recuperate before their last full day of tutorials for week one.
