As usual the academic sessions kicked off the day. Those studying Medicine were particularly excited to be dissecting lamb hearts and lungs whilst others enjoyed engaging discussions in their groups. Many of the groups have been set presentations and extra work outside of classes therefore keeping most of the participants busy throughout the morning and afternoon.

Despite the torrential rain, the participants maintained high spirits throughout the day. Armed in purple and yellow plastic ponchos, half of them braved a chauffeured punting tour of Cambridge! Punting is a fun way tour Cambridge via the River Cam, which was once used for transporting heavy goods to Cambridge since the Middle Ages. One chauffeur even informed us that Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland, garrisoned many of his horses INSIDE King’s College chapel.

Time for Some Samba

Back at Queens college, the other half enjoyed a cultural session of Brazilian drumming. Each participant was assigned a specially-crafted instrument to contribute to the culmination of a Samba band.

Suited and booted, all of the participants had been invited to attend a formal three-course dinner at St John’s College! As one of the oldest and most renowned colleges in the university, the students were very excited to experience a quintessential Cambridge experience.

To round up the day, the participants had the opportunity to ask the mentors questions about what it is like to study and live in Cambridge during the ‘Mentor Q&A’ session. Questions ranged from ‘what will be the impact of Brexit on international students’ to whether students ‘have to share a kitchen’. The participants were engaged and asked really important questions.
