About the Atlas Shrugged Essay Contest: Exploring Ideas Through Literature and Critical Thought

The Atlas Shrugged Essay Contest is organized by the Ayn Rand Institute (ARI), a nonprofit organization founded in 1985 to promote the philosophy of Objectivism, as developed by novelist and philosopher Ayn Rand. Based in California, ARI seeks to foster intellectual engagement with Rand’s ideas through educational programs, public outreach, and student competitions.

The contest is run by the Education Programs Department at ARI and invites high school, college, and graduate students worldwide to read Ayn Rand’s novel Atlas Shrugged and respond to one of several thought-provoking essay prompts. The competition is designed to encourage students to think critically about the novel’s themes—such as individualism, freedom, and the role of government—and to develop their own interpretations through structured, persuasive writing.

Launched in 2007, the Atlas Shrugged Essay Contest is the third and most advanced of ARI’s annual student essay competitions, following those for Anthem and The Fountainhead. Each year, it awards more than $25,000 in prizes to winners and finalists.
