Experience living in a
Cambridge University for your programme
I really wanted an opportunity to expand my academic portfolio. A simple Google search led me to the Immerse essay competition, and I thought that this one in particular would be really great for me because there are a lot of opportunities to explore subject-based ideas.
During the two weeks, I’ve learned a whole lot, and a whole lot about myself as a person and about what leadership truly is. I think the beauty of this programme is that it allows you to delve deep into abstract ideas. And I think that’s really aided me in terms of practical skills.
We’ve learned about intersectionality, womanism, which is a subsection of feminism, and we’ve learned about unconscious bias misogyny. I feel like all of these things are current in real life and applicable and things we should be aware of.
I think I’ve developed as a person in multiple different ways. First of all, this course in particular has allowed for a lot of self exploration. You’re learning about complex concepts and you’re being advised and challenged to apply them to your own life, which allowed me to do a lot of introspection and see where I am and blossoming and doing really well, but also where I’m not doing quite so well – it’s also about recognizing your own unconscious bias and not being passive, but consciously making the decision not to fall into those. My confidence has increased a lot with this course – encouragement about public speaking, being eloquent and taking opportunities as they come
I’ve been learning about the disadvantages and advantages a woman faces in the workplace and how to navigate those situations, how to use the skills that I have, and how I can adapt what I’m learning on the programme and bring it into real life scenarios in the future.
As a team, we were given a question at the beginning of the two week programme which was “How can women impact climate change?” In our team, we worked towards a presentation at the end of the programme. We were given different roles such as researchers, project managers.
We presented our idea of creating a female-led business to help impact the fast fashion community.
Of course my favourite part of the program was definitely the people that I’ve met and the different cultural backgrounds, especially in the future female leaders program there are so many people that have different experiences and have come from different places that have different levels of rights and representation – it’s been really incredible.
The Female Future Leaders programme was an incredible experience. It taught me a lot, and I really enjoyed the people and tutors that I got to meet, and the connections I’ve made. It really broadened my horizons, especially if you have issues with public speaking and confidence – they’ve really helped with that.

The individualised attention was something that I was incredibly pleased with. It really helped me to delve into my area of interest, and to learn far more about the subject than I could have on my own. It’s built up my confidence, and I’m now sure that I want to advance my interest to university level.
