Immerse Education’s Essay Competition Winner 2019 (16-18 category)

Immerse Education’s annual essay competition has finally come to a close. After an immense amount of submissions (over 700 from 70 different countries), the 2019 winner of the 16-18 year old category was Abhayjeet Sachal. Abhayjeet, a student from Canada, wrote an original and insightful piece on the impact of climate change on Inuit populations.

He has been awarded a 100% paid scholarship to one of Immerse Education’s academic programmes this summer.

Every year Immerse Education offers scholarships to a handful of bright and aspiring students from around the world. Through its essay competition, students have the opportunity to receive a 100% paid scholarship to one of its academic programmes held at Cambridge University this summer.

This is a fantastic opportunity for secondary school students to impress with their research and writing skills, whilst demonstrating a passion for their chosen subject. Abhayjeet chose to examine the important role that medicine can play in order to aid Inuit population impacted by climate change.

Essay Summary

The Arctic is a barometer for the health of the world. If you want to know how healthy the world is, come to the Arctic and feel its pulse.

Abhayjeet addresses the extremely pressing concern of climate change whilst providing a unique insight into a potentially forgotten population, the Inuits. The Inuits live in the Arctic regions of Greenland, Canada, and Alaska; and have quietly suffered from the reckless industrialism of their more southern counterparts.

Abhayjeet begins his essay by addressing the devastating impacts that climate change is having on the health of Artic communities, making use of a powerful quote by Sheila Watt-Cloutier, a Canadian Inuit activist : ‘The Arctic is a barometer for the health of the world. If you want to know how healthy the world is, come to the Arctic and feel its pulse’. Following this, he goes on to ask the question ‘is there a correlation between suicide rates in Artic communities and climate change?’, capturing the attention of the reader immediately. The panel of judges at Immerse Education explained that they simply could not stop reading it until the very final word.
